AUBREY CAGLEBorn 17 September 1928, Lexington, Tennessee Aubrey Cagle is not exactly a household name. He recorded only a handful of singles, but these are generally held in high regard by fans of rockabilly music and have been heavily reissued on compilations. His first single, released in 1957, was "Real Cool"/"Want To Be Wanted Blues" on the Memphis label House of Sound, an excellent double-sider. He soon left Memphis for Indianapolis, where he formed his own label, Glee Records. During the years 1959-1962, Cagle had four releases on Glee (one in each year), the best of which was "Be-Bop Blues" from 1959. The last two Glee singles came out under the pseudonym Billy Love. That's about all I know about Cagle. According to Terry Gordon's website, there was an article (with sessionography) about him in New Kommotion 19 (1978), but I do not have that issue. Additions are welcome. CD: Aubrey Cagle, Real Cool (Solid Gold CD 102, released in 2000). Only nine tracks, three previously unissued. |
