|Live On Stage, Bill Haley & His Comets Revival
SEC Records, 2001
Founded in Germany 14 years ago, Bill Haley & His Comets Revival have been around for quite some time. The band is using the name with kind permission of the Original Comets. In November 1989, the Original Comets were back on stage, and the German Revival Band was invited to do a show with them in Bristol (UK). This was one of the highlights in the history of the revival band. Marshall Lytle of the Original Comets recalls: "When I saw those guys, I saw myself and Bill on stage 40 years ago!".
A CD release of the band's wild, acrobatic and comic live show was long overdue. Recorded live at the Warner Music Club, the hottest rock 'n' roll revival from here to Texas (their words) is now available on the SEC Records label. After a short instrumental intro, the band hits off with "Razzle Dazzle". The sound and enthusiasm of the band is just great. This is the kind of music that gets the audience on their feet, just like in the original Bill Haley movie "Rock Around The Clock".
Pompilli's "Rudy's Rock", always one of my favorites, is an awesome six-and-a-half-minutes battle of the giants, with "Rudy" Teabone tearing up the house with his saxophone and "Bam Bam" Cellarhope giving his all on the drums. Of course, Bill's biggest "Rock Around The Clcok", the famous movie theme hitrecord from "Blackboard Jungle", couldn't be left out, and the revival band does a great job, even on a very well known song like this one.
"When The Saints Go Marching In" is even more revved up than Bill's own version (of this Louis Armstrong original) and I never mananged to keep my butt on a chair when the band plays "Shake Rattle & Roll" or "See You Later Alligator". Of course all chatter (German as well as English) and intros of the live gig were left in to give you the ultimate live-feeling. What can I say, if you're a Bill Haley fan, a rock 'n' roll fan, or a fifties fan in general, go get this rocking CD, or better still, go see these guys live on stage!
Introducing the band:
End of 2000 "Bill Haley Revival" had to proove their quality of TV appearance. The German TV station VOX recorded a 90 minutes live concert and presented it without any cuts to the European TV audience. Indeed this was the first TV appearance of this lenght for a tribute band. The video will be available for the private video market in the fall of 2001.
